The Tyranny and Terror of the Symbol

Western societfor the better part of two centuries has been pressured under the illusory idea that human beings are intrinsically, immanently, good; that if there is no reason to do evil, it will not be done. That if humans only imagine, they can perfect themselves. Into what precisely, nobody informs; nobody is able to inform; for, having abandoned the Law of Moses, the west has ceased watering the very roots which allowed its flowers to bloom.

A culture of terror is a culture of forgetting and regretting. A culture of terror is obsessed with image, novelty, and youth, those aesthetic elements of the ancient pagan societies. We read “novels’, progress in history to an undefined point, like a madman chasing the horizon in pursuit of the sun, mock age and wisdom and deter and slow its encroachment with ever new and expensive elixirs of youth.

The industrial revolution acted as a severe rapier cutting through the mythology of the enlightenment. Humans were now destroying the very earth on which they inhabited, exploiting human beings without even a pause to check if their debauchery was in consonance with what they proclaimed was real. The proscriptive elements of the biblical tradition had been abandoned and functioned only ceremonially in the Victorian court and ceased to be of compelling force as the invisible hand was invoked to describe and dictate labor and capital arrangements.  Karl Marx surveyed the landscape of the 1840’s and at some undetermined point made room for the horror of the progressive destruction by finding solace in a historicism of the dialectic, the class struggle. The first sociologist, Marx was convinced that there existed in this chaos and butchery, opium wars, and imperialism, some subtle rule of history, a law perhaps directing the chorus of  human babble like a low and indistinguishable metronome.

Marixsm provided a replacement theology for a society with no G-d. Communism, it was propounded, is the end state of history, a flattening of the superstructures of society that are erected in the process of class struggle. Marx correctly noted that religion was the opiate of the masses; he merely failed to identify the fact that it had become that under pressure of a rapid secularization and the centralization of power in the hands of the state. Religion having ceased functioning in the world, and thus having lost its meaning, and its potential, became mere solace, a sedative to the misery brought about by a world gone slowly astray.

A scientific socialism was to be the rectifying force of the new socialist order. Although it advanced no experimental procedures, it was deemed scientific because it didn’t make use of age old wisdom, the abandonment of which, regrettably and verily, had caused the very dilapidation which Marxism sought to rectify. This was not an age of intellectual precision.

Neither were its antecedent ages. A line of misery can be traced from the Romantic and German idealist thought to the horrors of both Stalin’s and Hitler’s regimes. The post Kantian philosophic movements, their apotheosis in Schopenhauer and Hegel, split. Schopenhauer proclaimed the world as will; and under the mystification and obfuscation of the Vedic and Buddhist tradition declared that it was a very bad thing.  And considering the general state of Europe in his lifetime, who could argue the fact?

Hitler did, he argued vigorously. Professing to have read Schopenhauer’s World as Will so many times while in the trenches, Hitler said that his fingers had worn the binds. For Hitler, the will was the ultimate, the form of the Good. And his will for the Germanic people was to purify their blood and aesthetic sense, a cult of imagery which borrowed heavily from the emptiness and the metaphysical justifications for class caste systems of the eastern philosophies. Schopenhauer had stated thus:

“the highest civilization and culture, apart from the ancient Hindus and Egyptians, are found exclusively among the white races; and even with many dark peoples, the ruling caste or race is fairer in colour than the rest and has, therefore, evidently immigrated, for example, the Brahmans, the Incas, and the rulers of the South Sea Islands. All this is due to the fact that necessity is the mother of invention because those tribes that emigrated early to the north, and there gradually became white, had to develop all their intellectual powers and invent and perfect all the arts in their struggle with need, want and misery, which in their many forms were brought about by the climate. This they had to do in order to make up for the parsimony of nature and out of it all came their high civilization.

It does not take an imaginative leap to arrive at the gas chambers. But for good measure let us follow this statement to its conclusion. Notice its blatant materialistic causation, something that can be found in Jared Diamonds 300 page diatribe Guns, Germs, and Steel, that culture is a derivative of environment. The fact that Jared took an entire book to restate a simple paragraph should be a lesson to us that a Professor at UCLA can be regarded as stupid in his verbosity as the common comedian, and in many instances more perfidious. But lest I digress further, let us arrive at Schopenhauer’s quod erat demonstrandum:

While all other religions endeavor to explain to the people by symbols the metaphysical significance of life, the religion of the Jews is entirely immanent and furnishes nothing but a mere war-cry in the struggle with other nations.

Our first reaction is one of incredulity, one of mere disdain. But upon further cogitating, it becomes apparent that he is absolutely correct. He is correct in his own context. If one is to classify as great the nation of Egypt, which enslaved the Jews, killed dogs for ritual pleasure, worshiped the pharaoh, a cult of imagery and demon worship, a metaphysical Justification for class stratification and an obsession with death to such an extent that they revered it more than life, and India, with its grotesque and barbaric caste system its overemphasis on the actualization of the unseen, the Karma conferring upon the individual his status, and thus another justification for enslavement, then count me as one of those that will sharpen their swords and cry out in war against the falsity of those nations and their debasement of human divinity. The only image in Judaism is the Divine soul of the human being. And it was this that was regarded as the war cry of the Jews against the nations that abuse humans in the name of the metaphysical “symbols” and meaningless myths.

It should not surprise us that the swastika ended up on the flag of the nation that sought to eradicate the Jews. It is an eastern cultic symbol of various deities whose characteristics are hardly worth mentioning. When Hitler adopted the Swastika he gave his reason as reverence to the same “creativity” as Schopenhauer so deified:

“As National Socialists, we see our program in our flag. In red, we see the social idea of the movement; in white, the nationalistic idea; in the swastika, the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man, and, by the same token, the victory of the idea of creative work.” (My emphasis)

Hitler surely explained to man the meaning of the world in symbols. Did he not, Herr Schopenhauer?

When the Creator warned against carving graven images, He warned against shape shifting reality into the unreal. Nothing about the Nazi flag was real; it was symbol of a myth the origins of which lie at the line where man dropped his biblical inclinations. Symbols are used to mesmerize the masses into believing that a conjecture with a symbol attached to it has more meaning than the symbol itself. The term “symbol” is so entrenched in the modern psyche that the word itself is misused with the same regularity that symbols are used to justify the diadem of the day. Thus, “Symbol” is often heard used to describe what in truth is an analogy, which is the explanatory tact of using something real to explicate something real; while symbolizing is using something real to actualize something at best conjectural and at worse false, or, at its most mendacious, a justification and totemic  buttress for tyranny.

The biblical tradition demands adhering to a reality of distinctions where symbolic weaving is proscribed for the very reason that it has a tendency to entrance man to the extent that he will engage in immoral behavior to fulfill the demands of the symbol. We see this phenomenon today in modern political discourse, especially on the left, where the emotive and the symbol mean more than any intelligible argument. Recalling the above, religion has ceased to be functional in any meaningful way in a secular society and has thus been rendered only in its symbolic representations. To revisit Herr Schopenhauer he said of the role and function of government is to “leave each man free to work out his own salvation.” What that means nobody but Schopenhauer can attest. And I am sure he would attest deftly that man ought to be allowed to create as many symbols as to give him solace that the world has meaning, to ignore the wisdom of the sages of Judea and to do what feels right, to emote more than think and yell more than speak. All these deeds describe in great depth our current, modern disease, where the distinction between what is real and what is graven image is all but gone. Having retreated it is, the distinction,  an erasure smudge on the intellect of mankind.

Forgetting is the role of the symbol. It pushes and advances upon the now broken human mind, once an aperture able to distinguish right and wrong, that the old is decrepit and backwards, a chronological chauvinism and fetish with the novel, both in book form and in political form, engendering the idea that even the elderly human person is of little value, someone more readily to be mocked for their antiquated idiosyncrasies of basic and decent propriety than be learned from. How many times have we heard our current politicians urge us to go “forward” and to not look back? Don’t look back, lest you find yourself outside the cave of symbolic representations whose “logos” are designed to entrance the consumer, pull the lever on the ballot, and give justification to everything from pederasty to infanticide (abortion). Even concepts become symbolic and stand alone empty without any justification besides an emotive whine. “Women’s reproductive rights” Herr Hitler and Herr Schopenhauer would both enthusiastically support.

Now extant are metaphysical and symbolic rallying cries that sound more like entertainment than anything of humanitarian significance. “Come join us at our silent auction for the benefit of some symbolic organization x that seeks to RAISE AWARENESS about sex slavery and human trafficking. Event includes food, champagne, and social respectability,” I heard an ad on the radio say as much this evening. That in prior days something found abhorrent in any culture, even in symbol worshiping cultures, would be met with furious rage and vanquished by sword or gun, bringing the Justice of G-d on the evil, is an idea that well pampered liberal cultural relativists find abhorrent. So they will instead have benefit banquets for human trafficking but rage indefinitely against any poor lad with the temerity to tell them that killing children in utero is just as evil, or that homosexuality makes as little biological sense as it does metaphysical sense. But our ethos has absconded and any remaining detritus is reduced to the imperative to “leave each man free to work out his own salvation.” Why infanticide is less repugnant than sex slavery nobody ever cares to explicate. Liberal values are always pick and choose symbolic gestures to a zeitgeist the origins of which they can hardly articulate or understand.

This symbolizing of ethical imperatives creates a culture of terror the aim of which is to reduce human beings to emotive sloganeers that can demonstrate en mass against an object of vilification for an unending amount of time. Like Orwell’s poor and dejected Goldstein, the name of which is apropos, a Jewish surname, western society is so entranced by its myth-making apparatus that created “peace in our time” as gas chambers were choking the Children of Israel, that they again seek to remove Jews from their ancestral homeland by a “roadmap to peace,” which is really a road map of terror,legitimizing a mythic and overly symbolic people whose only national identity comes from its hatred of the Jews.

The zenith of western fiction is the carefully crafted notion of the existence of an indigenous Palestinian people who were evicted from their homes by force in a systematic manner reminiscent of the Nazi purges of European Jews. This narrative is entirely false as has been shown time and again by the historians who care enough about justice to look into the matter with serious and objective intent. But again, the myth-making west has a pantheon and the Zeus of “Peace in our time” reigns over Justice so that the western materialist Esau can use the hunter barbarian Ishmael to kill Israel in a war of terror and attrition.

Jews are the enemy not of nations as Schopenhauer would have us believe, but the enemy of a culture of apathy and atrophy that may soon prove that if the western world will not stand up again, remember its past, abandon its myths and recognize the G-d of Israel and return to him in penitence, it will die of its own desire to parch the Root Israel that it once maintained it had grafted itself.

These circumstances should not be overburdening or saddening but revealing and thus bring great joy. For all the romancing and myth-making, the symbol weaving and secular necromancy, the Jewish people yet live. They have returned to their homeland and their G-d has left their detractors and usurpers and enemies in Europe pummeled by American artillery and razed by British and American bomber crews, to be left wallowing and perennially shamed by their intransigence and diabolical enlightenment symbology to fade into history as a Europe that has merely become a window into the soul of mankind gone astray, a museum to the memory of their debauchery and ego mysticism; a geographical landmass whose strata are entombed with the bodies of the ones who proclaimed the existence of the real and the One. Europe has lived its comeuppance, but has failed to learn from it.
